pizza - the first attempt
It wasn't a complete disaster, but it wasn't as easy as I thought it was going to be either. I don't know if it was because of the boxed mix or if I'm just not used to using the bread machine yet, but making the crust was way more difficult than it sounded. An SOS call to my sister and her "master chef" husband left me with a floury but good-tasting crust, and the sauce tasted great on the pizza, so, all things considered, I think it was a pretty good first attempt. There are a couple other things I'm going to tweak next time, aside from the crust, to include the sauce. When I make red sauce there are always a some chunks of Romano that don't quite melt all the way, and while those taste great in spaghetti or lasagna or stuffed shells, they're not so great in pizza - especially cold pizza. For the next batch (amazingly enough, I'm almost through with the vat I made the other day) I'm going see how the Romano melts when cut into even smaller pieces, although I think it might be easier to just to grate it.
While I was waiting for the bread machine to work its magic on the dough I started prepping things for the apple pie, with a couple of interruptions as I took breaks to work on the pizza and to monitor the shells I was boiling. It was close to 9 when I was done with all of that, and since I didn't want to stay up till 10 babysitting a pie, Mike suggested that I just put everything in the fridge and bake it when I get home today. The end result is a container of shells to be stuffed, a crust that needs to be put in a pie pan, and a large bowl full of apples to mix with spices and fill said crust all waiting for me to get home.
